Of course, you are not obliged to use professional removal companies.
There's no law forcing you to do so and no particular tax or other legal issues that mean you can't adopt alternative approaches if you so wish.
You can, for example, simply throw all of your possessions on to the back of a truck and do your own removal. You can ask someone who has a vehicle they normally use for (e.g.) delivering fruit and vegetables to come around and put your office or personal items on the back and do the delivery for you.
Come to think of it, you don't even need to professionally pack your items either. You could just load up and gamble that the cost of any damages sustained in transit will be lower than the amount you would have had to pay for professional packing services to begin with.
However, if the above sounds totally surreal to you then it might pay to think again about trying to save a few dollars by not using moving specialists.
Some people are occasionally surprised at just how much of a specialised skill set office and domestic removals are.
For a start, it's important to have the right size and type of vehicle. A professional will be able to near-instantly assess, from a description or visual inspection of the removal site, just what is required.
Doing that yourself might result in you either paying too much for an unnecessarily large vehicle or even worse, finding that you need to make two trips because you underestimated just how much stuff you were trying to shift.
Packing is something else that isn't just a question of putting some bubble wrap around a few items. For example, packing a lot of very heavy things into a single box might not be the smartest of ideas - something you might discover when the bottom falls out of the box because you have exceeded its maximum load capabilities.
Then there is the loading of the vehicle. Moving specialists will understand exactly how to optimally load household or office content so that they are at the least risk of damage in transit.
In addition, it's important to understand the weight distribution characteristics of a given vehicle. To state one obvious example, loading everything heavy along one side of the vehicle might not be a smart idea - not something you'll wish to experience for the first time when trying to turn a corner.
Having talked about the specialist skills of removals experts, a word or two also has to be said about the brawn factor.
If you have ever put your back out whilst trying to shift heavy items or suffered the humiliation of being unable to lift something weighty onto a truck, then you'll know just how important strength can be!
Above all though, perhaps stress reduction is the biggest single argument for using moving specialists as opposed to trying to do it yourself.
Moving your home or office is inevitably going to be stressful and it might be plain common sense to try and reduce that as much as possible. That's why using moving specialists with real experience should be perhaps a no-brainer for many.
